Rockland County’s New Traffic Points System Explained

In February of 2026, New York State introduced a new traffic points system. This system is stricter than many drivers are probably used to, and it makes sense to become familiar with this new reality if you want to stay on the road. How have things changed? You Now Face Points for Alcohol and Drug-Related Driving Offenses 

Although many drivers are probably unaware, New York did not enforce additional “points” for DUI offenses prior to February of 2026. The new system not only adds points to these offenses, but does so in an extremely significant way. Since this new system went into effect, you now face 11 points for a single drug or alcohol-related incident on the road.

New Points for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 

Another traffic offense that previously triggered zero points was aggravated unlicensed operation. This offense involves knowingly driving while your license is suspended or revoked. Since the arrival of the new points system, this offense now triggers 11 points on your license.

You also face new points for “facilitating” aggravated unlicensed operation. This offense involves allowing someone to drive your vehicle even though you know they lack a valid license. While this previously resulted in zero points, it now triggers five.

Street Racing Now Triggers Five Points on Your License 

Another offense that now triggers additional points is street racing. The New York Department of Motor Vehicles refers to this as “speed contests and races,” and it triggers five points on your license.

Other Traffic Points Have Been Increased by the DMV 

Aside from these new additions, other existing traffic offenses have had their points increased by the DMV. This includes Overtaking or passing a stopped school bus, which now triggers eight points instead of five. Leaving the scene of a personal injury crash once triggered three points, but now it triggers five. Finally, “failure to exercise due care” now triggers five points instead of just two.

Why Does This Matter? 

These changes have major implications. In New York, your license could be suspended as soon as you accumulate 10 points. The new system also increases the “lookback period” from 18 months to 24 months, making it easier to accumulate these points. Note that some offenses automatically exceed your points allowance, such as DWI or aggravated unlicensed operation.
