Twitch Streamer Faces Charges Of Inciting A Riot After Giveaway Gone Wrong

PoliceRiot

Social media influencers today have almost unbelievable amounts of power. In many ways, they are more influential than even the most well-known politicians in the Empire State – and their followers often obey their instructions without second thought. That being said, social media influencers are not completely immune from consequences. While they might have the power to coordinate their followers, they may face serious legal penalties for doing so in the wrong manner. One such streamer is now facing charges for organizing an unlawful assembly in the middle of Union Square Park.

Kai Cenat Could be Charged with Inciting a Riot After Attempting to Give Away PS5

On August 4th of 2023, it was reported that a Twitch streamer named Kai Cenat had been taken into police custody after a public giveaway went wrong. The streamer had attempted to give away PS5 gaming consoles and video games, announcing to his followers that the giveaway would take place at Union Square Park. Thousands of young followers immediately appeared at the scene, and the gathering quickly spiraled out of control.

A wide range of unlawful acts were reported. Police were forced to shut down nearby subway stations and streets as young people committed acts of violence and vandalism. One was seen using a fire extinguisher to spray the crowd. Others became violent toward each other and police officers. NYPD Chief Jeffrey Maddrey stated that he witnessed people running away from the mayhem while bleeding from facial and head wounds.

Helicopters captured the carnage from above as Kai himself attempted to escape. The footage showed several of his followers literally hanging onto Kai’s car as it drove down the street. Some of these individuals broke into a nearby construction site, stole various items, and threw them at each other.

The gathering was quickly declared an unlawful assembly by the police, giving them the authority to round up mischief-makers. They also took Kai Cenat into custody, and he was filmed getting into a police vehicle. It seems as though he was encouraged to film a video in this police vehicle, encouraging his followers to go home and stop the violence. He may be charged with inciting a riot, which may result in a Class A Misdemeanor. Police were quick to point out that this entire incident represents the dangers of social media.
