What Happens If You Leave Your Re-Entry Center In New York?

WalkingAway

In the United States, convicts may have the opportunity to transition from prison life to freedom while living in “reentry centers.” The purpose of a reentry center is to give convicts a chance to adjust to “life on the outside” – perhaps pursuing employment opportunities and other steps that make it easier to re-enter civilian life. While these reentry centers may be helpful, it is important to remember that convicts may face serious consequences for leaving the facilities without warning.

Bank Robber Pleads Guilty to Escaping Reentry Center

On October 5th, it was reported that a convicted bank robber had pleaded guilty to escaping from a reentry center in Buffalo. According to the Justice Department, the individual in question had carried out a bank robbery at gunpoint before being sentenced to 85 months behind bars. In 2021, he was transferred to the Lighthouse Buffalo Residential Reentry Center. However, he simply walked out of the center a few months later.

A staff member of the reentry center managed to reach the defendant on the phone, and this staff member instructed the defendant to return to the reentry center. In response, the defendant apparently revealed that he was planning to leave the state – suggesting that he was prepared to run from the law. Eventually, the individual was located by US Marshals.

As a result of leaving the reentry center, the defendant faces a maximum of five years in prison. This illustrates just how serious it can be to walk away from a reentry center. For all intents and purposes, a reentry center is like a prison. If you walk away, it will be seen as an “escape attempt” – even if there are fewer security measures actually keeping you inside the facility.

When Might I Get Transferred to a Reentry Center?

According to the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, the Re-Entry Unit serves to facilitate a smooth transition for individuals returning home from prison. Re-Entry Services may be associated with mental health treatment, referrals for housing, medical services, anger management, substance abuse prevention services, mentoring, and much more. Those eligible for re-entry services include COMPAS level 1, 2, or 3 convicts released from a New York State Facility. An attorney may have the ability to help you get access to re-entry services in New York.
