You Need To Be Aware Of New Jersey’s Changing Gun Laws

GunPaperwork

Whether you’re a gun owner or not, it’s important to be aware of changing gun laws in New Jersey. If you already own firearms, you should definitely stay up-to-date on this changing legislation, as ignorance could result in criminal charges if you’re not careful. And if you’re not a gun owner, you should be aware of how these laws might limit or prevent you from acquiring a firearm in the future. So what exactly is happening with New Jersey’s gun laws, and how might they affect your life?

If you are facing criminal charges related to firearms in New Jersey, it makes sense to get in touch with a qualified, experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. These legal professionals can guide you towards a positive outcome in the most confident, efficient way possible. Becoming aware of changing gun laws is only the first step, and you also need to protect yourself from potential charges with the help of an attorney. The sooner you reach out to a qualified defense attorney, the better.

New Jersey is About to Make Its Gun Laws Even Stricter

If you’re a law-abiding gun owner in New Jersey, you probably know that the Garden State is quite strict when it comes to firearms. Well, the state’s laws may become even stricter in the coming weeks and months. On December 14th of 2021, it was reported that a state Assembly had approved a new set of bills that would introduce a number of new limitations on gun rights.

Here’s a breakdown of the proposed changes:

  • You will have to renew your purchaser ID card every four years
  • You will need to prove completion of a course on how to store and handle firearms
  • You will need a purchaser ID card even if you inherit firearms
  • You will not be allowed to purchase .50 caliber firearms
  • You will need to register your existing .50 caliber firearm
  • You will need to pay a $50 fee for an existing .50 caliber firearm
  • You will be banned from leaving behind a .50 caliber firearm in your will
  • You will need to store your firearms in a locked safe
  • All firearm manufacturers will need to micro-stamp new firearms sold in New Jersey
  • All ammunition manufacturers and dealers will need to keep detailed records
  • You will need to get a purchaser ID card and register your guns if you move to New Jersey

Concerns About Safety

Some critics have raised concerns about gun owner safety after hearing about these proposed changes. This is especially in regard to the requirement that involves keeping guns locked in a safe at all times. If you live in a high-crime neighborhood, the whole point of having a firearm is to access it quickly if someone breaks in and tries to rob or harm you. Fiddling around with a safe may lead to deadly consequences for law-abiding gun owners who are just trying to protect themselves, their properties, and their families.
